Tips on receiving shipments
For over many years and thousands of shipments, JVH has had no outbound shipping damage of inkjet media and inks, at least that we know of. This success is really a matter of common sense, always double-boxing products and overall, caring about the proper professional packaging. Most of our customers appreciate this - with products arriving on time, in good shape, and no damaged goods to deal with.
Our inbound shipments from suppliers are another matter - we have seen every form of abysmal shipping practices including dents, bruises, bonks, crushes, product falling out of cartons, ink leaking everywhere - yuk. Some of the boxes look like they came from a second store. It makes you cry to see $400 rolls of fine art paper bruised and dented with UPS labels slapped directly on the boxes of fine art paper that van Gogh painted on. Are you kidding !
TIP: When you receive shipment from anyone, if it is damaged by the carrier and unusable, do the right thing -- REFUSE IT. This makes life simple. Where we have drop shipped goods from a media distributor to you, the refused goods go right back to the distributor, we immediately reorder the replacement goods to be shipped to you, and are issued a credit with no questions asked. End of story. No arduous freight claims required by you, no hassling the distributor by us,, no he said-she said-you said-/we said run around, no fuss.
Example: We buy special shipping boxes for 24" x 30" Epson Posterboard sheets. Our package of Posterboard has generous packing materials inside and around it, and always arrives in perfect shape. However, when distributors dropship posterboard to our customers, they never put it in an external carton, and more often than not the posterboard arrives with the corners bent or sides dented often making the posterboard unusable. Shame on those distributors for these shoddy practices. Needless to say, we try to ship as much as we can from JVH, but sometimes a customer is on the other side of the country and needs the product tomorrow, so being aware of how to best to handle incoming shipments from vendors/distributors is worth knowing.
Another suggestion - On any inbound shipment you are receiving, if there is a hint of damage and you are not able to really verify if at the time of receipt, take a photoor two with your cell phone. Sometimes you need the product now, and don't really have time to refuse it. If you see any kind of damage or potential damage on the external carton at the time of delivery, then note on the waybill something like this example: "dented corners and punctures in carton - there may be internal damage, subject to inspection" Documentation is often everything - it doesn't mollify your wasted time, effort, disruption and frustration, but it can make you whole in terms of $$.
