Care & Feeding of Inkjet Printers
1. The single best thing you can do to keep your inkjet printer running smoothly is to keep the humidity between 40-60+%, especially when the printer is not running or stored for a period of time. Epson and Canon routinely see nozzle clog issues increase dramatically during dry winter months and especially in places like the MidWest. Where there is air conditioning and rooms with warm electronic equipment, the atmosphere can also easily become very dry. Some solutions for you:
a) Buy a cheap $100 whole room ultrasonic digital humdifier at Costco.
b) If you are storing or not using the printer on a regular basis, put a cover on the printer and place a tray of water underneath the cover. (An empty maintenance tank makes a nice tray.) We also have hooked up with a company that makes covers for many models of inkjet printers. Let us know if you are interested in a cover.
2. Most failures of inkjet printers are not the writing head, but instead the dampers or the capping station. All inkjet printers "cap off" the head so it does not have ink drying on the head bottom, causing nozzle clogs. It is not difficult to clean the capping station. Give us a call and we will walk you through it. If the rubber perimeter gasket on the capping station is dirty or has lost its integrity, all bets are off, because suction is lost, plus air can get in creating havoc.
3. If you are using Windex, ammonia or other home remedy for cleaning heads or capping station/wiper blade, be sure to do a final with distllled water. All those other chemicals can corrode a head.
4. Always make sure you have the latest firmware installed in your printer which fixes bugs and other issues. You can check the current firmware by going to front panel Menu/Printer Status/Version. Compare that number to the latest firmware revision on the printer manufacturer's site under Drivers & Downloads. If yours is not current, download the latest and install. It's pretty easy. If you need help, contact JVH and we will walk you through it..
5. Always run a nozzle to check the nozzle status. If necessary, run a Power Clean on the nozzle pairs affected. A occasional power clean does not use that much ink and is virtually the only thing you may need to do to maintain your printer.
